With the advancement of Science and Technology, and the proliferation of knowledge in developed and developing countries, inventions and creations have become a daily affair. The caution to safeguard the individual’s product of human intellect from abuse or misuse has necessitated a legal security cover. The incubation centers in almost all HEIs seek legal assistance to protect the inventions and the interests of the inventor and the laws concerned are called Intellectual Property Rights. Vellalar College for Women, with the intention of creating awareness among the Faculty and the Research Scholars, has launched the IPR Cell on 25.06.2018 with an Orientation Programme on Intellectual Property Rights. The IPR Cell of our college is committed to encourage the creativity and innovation that happen on its premises leading to generation of Intellectual Property. This Cell extends its services to the in-house scholars as well as the common public of our locality.

Objectives:

  • To orient the Faculty, Research Scholars and Students on the importance of IPR through Workshops/Seminars
  • To organize periodic meetings with the experts from Patent Information Centre for identifying patentable inventions
  • To guide and support the common public in obtaining protection for their creative ideas/inventions
  • To create conductive ambience for the development of Intellectual Property(IP)
  • To facilitate proper understanding of a wide range of legal concepts with regard to Copyrights, Trademarks, Patents, Geographical Indication, and Industrial Designs and Models
  • To foster innovations leading to Human progress and advancement

Realizing the potential of the Higher Education Institutions in incubating ideas and providing solutions, the IPR Cell of our college is committed to the cause of converting society-friendly research concepts to valuable patents.

A National Intellectual Property Awareness Mission (NIPAM) under the initiative of the Government’s “AzadikaAmritMahotsav” organized by Research Conclave, IPR Cell & Institutions Innovation council of Vellalar College for Women, an IPR awareness program on 27.07.2022 to create widespread awareness on Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) through online platform. Mrs. Susi Kumar, Examiner of Patents & Designs, Intellectual Property Office, GST Road, Guindy, Chennai acted as a resource person, who has 6 years of experience in IPR. The lecture began with explanation of various types of IPR in physical and electronic domains. Also explanation about what is IPR, importance and significance of IPR with examples. The steps to building a new brand were discussed in brief. Also information about Copy rights, Trademarks, Industrial design, Geographical indications, Trade secrets and Patents and their validity period were presented in an elegant manner. The lecture mainly focused on how to differentiate various kinds of IPRs, steps involved in filling an Indian & Foreign pattern and their fee structure. The presentation provides knowledge about how one can employ their own idea and creation by the use of IPR. Students and Faculty members interacted with resource persons and clarified their doubts. Faculty members and 1267 Students of various Departments attended this program. This program paved the way to understand the importance of Intellectual Property Rights.

Research Conclave & IPR Cell, IIC of Vellalar College for Women and National Intellectual Property Awareness Mission (NIPAM) jointly organized an IPR awareness program on 04.11.2022 to create widespread awareness on Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) through online platform under the initiative of the Government’s “Azadika Amrit Mahotsav”. On 26.09.2019, the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) and Intellectual Property Rights Cell (IPR) jointly organized a special lecture on “Evolve your Invention to sculpt your Ideas.” The main objective of the programme was to simulate the creation of intellectual property and make the faculty explore new ideas. Dr. E. Murugan, Assistant Professor of Electronics, Hindusthan College of Arts & Science, Coimbatore, was the guest speaker. He gave comprehensive details on e-filing to apply for patent. He spoke in detail on the patent types, Complete Specification and Provisional. He explained about obtaining digital signature and presented complete information on e-mudra and ipindia e filing. He delivered a gamut of information related to Form 1,2,5,9 & 18 which was of phenomenal usage to the participants. The programme ended with a positive outcome of expanding the participants’ knowledge on building intellectual property.

On 13.10.2018, the IQAC and IPR Cell jointly organized a one-day Faculty Development Programme on Intellectual Property Rights and Innovations. Dr. M.KanthaBabu, Director, Centre for Intellectual Property Rights, College of Engineering, Anna university, Chennai, was the resource person. He said that the intellectual property rights are the rights given to persons over the creations of their minds, He added that by intellectual rights a person or a company will have exclusive rights to use their own plans, ideas or other assets, without competition at least for a specific period of time. These rights can include copyrights, patents, trademarks, and trade secrets, he said. Nearly 120 faculty got a broad idea of how creations of mind could be protected for further growth in research, innovation and employment.

The IQAC and IPR jointly organized a Guest Lecture on Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) and Filing Provisional Patent in India on 18.10.2019. Dr.P.Sivaprakasam, Associate Professor and Head, Department of Physics, Sri Vasavi College, Erode, was the guest speaker. He spoke on the importance of invention which may be a tool, a mechanical gadget, a concept or an idea that will impact or improve humanity as a whole. He encouraged the participants to engage in inventive activities and detailed on how effective patent protection stimulates research. He stressed the significance of getting patents which is a protection for intellectual assents and to avoid duplication. He explained the need to file patent applications early to avoid the risk that someone else has obtained or will obtain a patent on the same idea. The participants got a clear idea of the process involved in filing the provisional patents. The beneficiaries were 47 faculty belonging to various disciplines.
